First, body appearance
Large body, strong physique. The ram has a large spiral angle, and 2/3 of the ewes have horns. The ram's nose is deep, the armour is flat, the back is straight, and the muscles are well developed. The limbs are tall and strong, and the muscles of the thighs are plump, and a large amount of fat is deposited around the caudal vertebra to form "hip". A shallow ditch in the middle of the lower edge divides it into two symmetrical halves. Ewes have large breasts and are well developed. The coat color is mainly tan, and some individuals are flower colors. There are fewer pure white and black individuals.
Second, living habits
Altay lambs are fast-growing and have a good ability to produce meat and are adapted to the conditions of year-round grazing. It is grazing in the Zhongshan Belt of the Altay Mountains in the summer with an elevation of 1500-2500 meters. The spring and autumn grazing land is located in the front mountain belt with an altitude of 800-1000 meters and the piedmont plain with 600-700 meters. The winter pastures are mainly in the low valleys and dunes.
Third, production performance
Altay sheep are both fat and fat sheep. Fast growth, suitable for fat lamb production. The average 4-month-old lamb was 38.9 kg, and the mother lamb was 36.7 kg; the 1.5-year-old ram was 70 kg and the ewes were 55 kg; the average weight of the ram was 92.98 kg, and the ewes were 67.56 kg. The slaughter rate of adult Aries was 52.88%, the carcass weight was an average of 39.5 kg, and the fat buttocks accounted for 17.97% of carcass weight. The lambing rate was 110.3%. Altay sheep sheared once in spring and autumn, and the average shearing volume was 2 kg for the adult ram and 1.5 kg for the ewes; the lamb for the year was 0.4 kg. Altay wool is poor in quality and wool is mainly used for felting.
