STMicroelectronics' MEMS business strategy: "The next wave of growth is personal care"

"We are now welcoming a new wave of MEMS market development. This is personal health". STMicroelectronics held a press briefing in Tokyo on August 26, 2011 to introduce its MEMS business strategy. Sales of MEMS components such as accelerometers have been increasing in the automotive and consumer products sectors. According to reports, as the third growth area after the above-mentioned fields, the field of personal health care based on human body information monitoring such as human motion and pulse will be vigorously developed in the future.

STMicroelectronics ranks first in the industry in the field of MEMS components for consumer electronics including mobile phones. In 2010, the company's share of the MEMS accelerometer market was 50%, and its share of the gyro sensor market was 30%. According to the company, the MEMS component market rose in the automotive sector in the 1990s. Around 2006, "the market for consumer products represented by the Nintendo game console 'Wii' has risen rapidly from scratch" (Beneetto Vigna, vice president of the STMicroelectronics Division and general manager of MEMS, sensors and high-performance analog products). After that, the acceleration sensor began to penetrate into the mobile phone from around 2008. In 2011, the application of the gyro sensor in mobile terminals such as smart phones was rapidly developed.

Driven by the above-mentioned consumer products, STMicroelectronics' sales of MEMS components have rapidly expanded to more than 10 times in the past five years. Annual sales in 2006 were approximately $30 million, compared to $300 million in 2010. This momentum has not weakened in 2011. It is expected that the daily capacity of MEMS components will reach 3 million by the end of 2011, twice as many as at the end of 2010.

STMicroelectronics expects that the growth of MEMS components following consumer products is in the field of personal care. Specifically, it includes (1) sensors for obtaining human body related signals such as human motion, sound, heart rate, and brain waves; (2) drug delivery pumps and drug delivery nozzles; (3) electrophoresis and molecular diagnostic components with cell and fluid processing, etc. field. In the field of (1), the goal is to establish a "Bio to Bit network" that uses MEMS sensors to convert "human body information into bits (digital data) and transmit it to medical institutions, etc., and establish an environment in which individuals can conduct their own health management." (Vigna). Such health care sensors "can effectively utilize the experience accumulated in consumer products" (Vigna).

Examples of products that STMicroelectronics conducts in this area include insulin pumps for diabetes treatment equivalent to (2). Through the joint development with Debiotech of Switzerland, the size of the "original electronic dictionary size" (Vigna's) insulin pump was reduced to several millimeters by MEMS technology. It has been recognized in the medical field in Europe and the United States, "will launch products in the next year or so" (Vigna). In addition, STMicroelectronics is also developing and evaluating chips for heart rate measurement, and plans to begin mass production within the next two years. In these areas of personal care, “Japan is shouldering the heavy responsibility of the birthplace of technological innovation. We have high hopes for Japan, which was once the driving force behind the automotive and consumer products market” (Vigna).
