Vegetable mulching covers new forms

1. This mulching technique is ideal for growing vegetables such as cucumbers, green peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants. A plastic film measuring 90 to 100 cm in width and 0.01 to 0.008 mm in thickness is laid over the sorghum bed. The sides of the film are pressed down onto the top of the dome, covering about two-thirds to three-quarters of the structure. The sorghum bed has specific dimensions: a bottom width of 100 to 110 cm, a top width of 80 to 85 cm, a height of 10 to 15 cm, and a furrow width of 30 to 40 cm. When setting up, ensure the center of the bed is slightly raised to help the film fit tightly and securely.

2. This method is suitable for onions, cabbages, and other similar crops. The mulch used here is 100 to 110 cm wide and can be adjusted based on the plot length. Before planting, the film is laid flat on the soil surface and secured with soil around the edges. This approach is more labor-efficient than using stakes, but it may cause surface pollution during irrigation and increase ground temperature, which could affect some crops.

3. For larger plants like green peppers and cabbages, a bigger mulch system is used. The base of the bed is 73 cm wide, 40 cm wide at the top, and 17 cm high. The film is placed over the planting area, and two or three rows of plants are grown per bed, allowing for efficient space utilization and better crop management.

4. This technique is particularly effective for cultivating large frame cowpeas. The mulch is 53 cm wide, 33 cm deep, and 16 cm high. It is simply laid over the planting area, providing an ideal environment for the growth of these crops.

5. This form of coverage is well-suited for early spring cabbage, water radishes, and root vegetables, as well as perennial crops like spinach and leeks before they regreen. The film is applied temporarily on the surface to speed up growth and improve market readiness, especially for early morning sales.

6. This method works well for green peppers, cucumbers, cabbages, tomatoes, and cowpeas. A ditch with a width of 40 to 50 cm and a depth of 15 to 20 cm is prepared, and seedlings are planted (or seeds are directly sown) into the ditch. The film is then placed over the area. Once the seedlings emerge, the film is either tied or cut open, allowing the plants to grow out from under the cover after the last frost. This technique allows for earlier planting in regions prone to night frosts.

7. This technique is commonly used for growing green peppers, cucumbers, and eggplants. The film is placed over a pair of large "cockroaches" (a term used for raised beds), and seeds or seedlings are sown or planted inside the inner part of the double bed. The film is then covered, and the plants grow in the space between the two raised areas for a certain period. After the risk of frost has passed, the seedlings are guided through the film to continue their growth.

8. This mulching method is suitable for crops like horned melons, cucumbers, and green peppers. After planting, bamboo poles or wicker sticks can be used to create arches over the beds. The frames are typically 33 cm wide and 33 cm high, and the film is stretched over them. The edges of the film are then packed with soil. Once the danger of frost has passed, the mulch can be removed and replaced with ground cover, helping to maintain soil moisture and temperature effectively.
