What are the commonly used protein feeds for cows?

Protein feed refers to dry matter in which the crude fiber content is below 18% and the crude protein content is 20% and over 20%, including plant protein feed and bad residue feed. China’s regulations prohibit the use of animal feed to feed ruminants. Plant protein feeds mainly include seeds, cakes, and other processing by-products.

1) Seed bean seeds have a high protein content of 20% to 40%.

2) Cakes

(1) The crude protein content of soybean cake is 38% to 47%, and the quality is good, especially the lysine content.

(2) Cottonseed cake The nutritional value differs greatly due to the degree of shelling and the method of oil production. The crude protein of the cotton kernel cake made from completely shelled cotton kernels can reach 40% to 44%, while the crude fiber content of the cottonseed cake produced by direct oil pressing without shelling can reach 16% to 20%. Protein is only 20% to 30%. The protein content of cottonseed (seed) cake with a portion of cottonseed hulls is between 34% and 36%. The quality of the protein of cottonseed cake is not ideal, lysine is low, and methionine is not enough.

(3) The peanut cake has higher energy and crude protein content, and crude protein can reach 44% to 48%. The composition of amino acids is not good, lysine content is only half of the soybean cake, and methionine content is also low.

(4) The rapeseed meal has lower effective energy and poor palatability. The crude protein content is 34% to 38%. The rapeseed meal contains toxins such as glucosinolates and erucic acid. In dairy cow diets should be controlled below 10%.

3) Grain processing by-products such as corn processing by-product corn protein powder. Due to different processing methods and conditions, the protein content varies greatly, between 25% and 60%.
