The study confirmed that PD-L1 protein not only works by gene therapy, but also produces and functions by small molecule pretreatment. The research team led by Fiorina used the harmless virus as a carrier to introduce the healthy PD-L1 gene into stem cells, which reversed the symptoms of diabetes in mice. In addition, the team also confirmed that the same effect can be achieved by treating cells with three small molecules of "interferon".

This is a new approach to the treatment of diabetes, which has the advantage that there is no rejection, because the patient uses his own cells.
