Yunnan's Grain Production Increases for a Continuous Year

According to Xinhua News Agency, despite the drought suffered for three consecutive years, after actively implementing measures such as the creation of high grain yields, intercropping, and plastic film coverage, this year, Yunnan still delivered a satisfactory answer sheet for scientific and technological drought and grain increase. The Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture predicts that the total grain output this year will reach 17.738 million tons, an increase of 1.238 million tons over the previous year, an increase of 7.5%; the annual average grain yield will be 264.9 kg/mu, an increase of 16.7 kg/mu, an increase of 6.7%. The ninth year of continuous production increase since 2003 has created a new historical record for grain production in Yunnan.

Zhang Yuming, Director of the Department of Agriculture of Yunnan Province, introduced that in the face of the drought disaster that has occurred since July, the province has actively organized drought relief, on the one hand taking replanting and replanting, carrying out comprehensive prevention and control of pests and diseases, and through disaster prevention and relief measures. It is estimated that about 200,000 tons of grain can be saved, laying the foundation for the harvest of autumn crops.

Zhang Yuming also introduced that Yunnan Province will increase the level of high-yield production this year, and Yiping’s efforts will be an important measure for the 500,000 tons of glutinous rice. According to the current measurement data, the province's only high-yielding demonstration area is expected to achieve 53.27 million tons of additional grain, which will result in fewer or fewer production cuts in hard-hit areas, slight disasters, and increased production in disaster-free areas. In addition, the province’s top ten science and technology grain increase measures have also played an important role in the anti-draught and bumper harvest and stable annual food production.
