Five Measures for Feeding Pigs in Summer

The hot and humid summer weather can have serious negative impacts on the pig farming industry. Common issues include reduced appetite, increased body temperature, lethargy, decreased sexual desire in boars, sows not showing heat or estrus, higher embryo mortality in pregnant sows, and even death in lactating sows when temperatures become too extreme. To help farmers mitigate these challenges, the author recommends implementing five key strategies to ensure pigs stay healthy and comfortable during the summer months. First, improving ventilation in pig houses is essential. For buildings constructed from east to west, make full use of airflow through front and rear windows. If possible, enlarge small windows before summer arrives. Installing electric fans in areas where temperatures rise significantly can also help improve air circulation and lower indoor temperatures. Second, using shading techniques can be very effective. Planting trees around the pig house not only helps with greenery but also provides natural shade. Additionally, building a pergola near the pig house can reduce ground temperature and create a cooler environment for the animals. Third, ensuring a constant supply of clean water is crucial during hot weather. Pigs consume more water in summer, so it's important to keep their drinking troughs filled at all times. Spraying water around the pig house can also provide some cooling effect. However, avoid directly spraying cold water on the pigs, as this can cause them to get sick. Fourth, adjusting feeding and management practices can greatly help. Try to feed pigs during cooler hours—early morning (4-5 AM) and late evening (8-9 PM), avoiding midday when it's hottest. Gradually adjust feeding schedules according to temperature changes rather than making sudden shifts. When moving piglets to market, choose early morning or late evening when it's cooler. Also, try to schedule farrowing during cooler periods if possible. Avoid using cold water to clean the farrowing area, as it can increase humidity. Clean the bedding regularly with a disinfectant solution and maintain high hygiene standards by cleaning feces at least twice daily and disinfecting the area 3-4 times a month. Control pests like flies and mosquitoes to keep the environment clean and safe. Lastly, adjusting the feed formula can help pigs better cope with the heat. For full-feed rations, consider adding 2-3 kg of baking soda, 150-200 g of vitamin C, and 80-100 g of vitamin E per ton. For sow feed, add 5-8 kg of edible oil per ton and slightly increase the crude protein content to support their nutritional needs during the hot season. By following these measures, farmers can effectively protect their livestock from the harmful effects of summer heat and ensure better productivity and animal welfare.
