It is very important for the management of strawberry fruiting period

The strawberry flowering and fruiting season typically occurs between April and May. During this period, it's crucial to maintain a field water holding capacity of 80%, provide 12 to 15 hours of sunlight daily, and keep the temperature between 18°C and 26°C. Effective management during this time is essential for maximizing yield and quality. Here are some key practices to follow: 1) **Fertilization** – From late March to early April, apply 10 to 15 kg of urea or compound fertilizer per 667 square meters to promote vigorous growth, new leaf development, and better flowering and fruiting. Fertilization should be done in conjunction with watering to ensure the soil remains moist. Additionally, foliar spraying with 0.3% to 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be applied 2 to 3 times for enhanced fruit development. 2) **Stem Removal** – Removing excess stems can significantly boost production by up to 40% to 50%. If you're planning to propagate strawberries, leave a few stolons as needed. However, excessive stems consume valuable nutrients and hinder the formation of flower buds. It’s best to remove them as soon as they appear, ideally three to four times a year. 3) **Bud Thinning** – Flowers that develop behind the main inflorescence often do not produce fruit and waste nutrients. It's recommended to remove these buds when they start to separate, cutting back 1/5 to 1/4 of the inflorescence. Weak or unproductive inflorescences should also be removed to focus energy on high-quality fruit development. 4) **Leaf Pruning** – Strawberries continuously produce new leaves, while older ones turn yellow and become less productive. During the flowering and fruiting stage, it's important to promptly remove old and diseased leaves, along with weak lateral buds. This helps reduce nutrient consumption and improves air circulation and light penetration within the plant canopy. 5) **Fruit Padding** – Due to their short stature, strawberries are prone to falling to the ground, leading to contamination and uneven coloration. To prevent this, use chopped straw or wheat straw around the plants. This practice is especially beneficial in areas without mulching film or where rainfall is frequent. 6) **Disease Prevention** – During flowering, common issues like white mold, leaf spot, and gray mold can occur. These can be managed using protective sprays such as a new fat film, 50% carbendazim diluted at 500 times, 70% thiophanate-methyl at 1000 times, 20% rust resistance at 1500 times, or 2% Wuyimycin at 200 times. 7) **Pest Control** – For aphid control, use 50% anti-inflamy WP at 2000–3000 times dilution, or 2.5% Uranus EC at 3000 times. If spider mites are present, apply 5% Nisolate EC at 2000 times, or 20% compound Liuyangmycin EC at 1000 times. It’s important to stop pesticide application at least 20 days before harvest to ensure food safety. 8) **Harvesting** – Ripe strawberries are soft and juicy, so timely harvesting is critical to prevent spoilage. Harvest in stages, picking once in the morning after the dew has dried, and avoid picking during the heat of the day. For fresh consumption or canning, aim for 80% ripeness—when the fruit is firm, has a bright color, and maintains its shape. (Source: China Plant Protection Network, Li Ruifeng)
