It is very important for the management of strawberry fruiting period

The strawberry flowering and fruiting period typically occurs from April to May. During this time, the soil should maintain 80% of its field water holding capacity, with 12 to 15 hours of sunlight daily and temperatures ranging between 18°C and 26°C. Proper management is essential for maximizing yield and quality. Here are key practices to follow: 1) **Fertilization** – From late March to early April, apply 10 to 15 kg of urea or compound fertilizer per 667 square meters to promote healthy growth, new leaf development, and better flowering. Combine fertilization with watering to keep the soil moist. Additionally, foliar sprays of 0.3% to 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be applied 2 to 3 times during this period to enhance fruit quality. 2) **Stem Removal** – Removing excess runners (stems) can increase yields by up to 40% to 50%. Only a few runners should be left if you're planning to propagate new plants. Excess stems consume valuable nutrients and may interfere with flower bud formation. Remove them as soon as they appear, ideally 3 to 4 times a season. 3) **Bud Thinning** – Some flowers that develop at the back of the inflorescence often fail to produce fruit and waste nutrients. It's recommended to remove these buds when they separate from each other, cutting back 1/5 to 1/4 of the inflorescence. Weak or non-productive inflorescences can also be removed. 4) **Leaf Pruning** – Strawberries continuously produce new leaves, while older ones turn yellow. During the fruiting stage, remove old and diseased leaves along with weak lateral shoots. This helps reduce nutrient loss and improves air circulation and light penetration within the plant canopy. 5) **Fruit Support** – Due to the short stature of strawberry plants, fruits often touch the ground, leading to contamination and uneven coloring. To prevent this, use straw or wheat stalks around the plants as mulch. This is especially important in areas without plastic mulch or where rain is frequent. 6) **Disease Prevention** – During flowering, diseases such as white mold, leaf spot, and gray mold can occur. Apply protective sprays like a new fat film or 50% carbendazim diluted 500 times, 70% thiophanate-methyl diluted 1000 times, 20% rust resistance diluted 1500 times, or 2% Wuyimycin diluted 200 times. 7) **Pest Control** – For aphids, use 50% anti-inflamy WP diluted 2000–3000 times, or 2.5% Uranus EC diluted 3000 times. For spider mites, spray 5% Nisolate EC diluted 2000 times or 20% compound Liuyangmycin EC diluted 1000 times. Avoid using pesticides within 20 days of harvest to ensure safe consumption. 8) **Harvesting** – Ripe strawberries are soft and juicy, so timely harvesting is crucial to avoid spoilage. Harvest in stages, picking once in the morning after the dew has dried, and again before the heat of the day. For fresh or processed use, pick when the fruit is about 80% ripe—firm, colorful, and well-shaped. (Source: China Plant Protection Network, Li Ruifeng)
