New method for computer simulation in the treatment of pelvic malignant tumors in China

Recently, a study published in the latest issue of Science and Technology Herald--"Biomechanical study of the reconstruction of the long bones of the lower limbs after the semi-pelvic amputation" has been studied by the School of Biological and Medical Engineering of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Shanghai Tongji Hospital and Shanghai. The Pudong New Area People's Hospital was jointly completed, and this frontier research in medical engineering in China has brought new treatments to patients with pelvic malignant tumors.

Although with the advancement of medical technology, limb salvage surgery has gradually become the mainstream of pelvic malignant tumor treatment, but semi-pelvic amputation is still the only choice for some patients with advanced cancer. After the pelvic amputation, the patient's trunk sag caused scoliosis and ankle pain, postoperative imbalance, high performance on the prosthesis, and even life-long wheelchair life.
In order to improve the quality of life of patients with semi-pelvic amputation, it is an effective method to reconstruct the anchorage of the original ischial tuberosity after the amputation, and to restore the integrity of the pelvic ring. The reconstruction of this biological method has the advantages of fast bone healing, no immune response and low cost compared to the application of metallic materials. In order for the patient to maintain a normal sitting position after surgery and to walk after installing the prosthesis, the reconstructed pelvis must have considerable load-bearing capacity and may not be crushed by its own weight. In order to solve this problem, Niu Wenxin applied the finite element method to simulate the human pelvis which is completely consistent with the normal mechanical properties, and can bear different physiological loads as in the human body. By applying the pressure of the simulated sitting posture, the force and deformation results of any region of the pelvis are obtained, and the data is in good agreement with the mechanical test results of the human body specimen. He also implemented different surgical procedures on the computer and performed force analysis under sitting conditions. The results of the analysis can not only compare the advantages and disadvantages of different surgical procedures, but also improve the details of the surgery.
