It’s funny how time seems to fly by without warning. Before you know it, another year has passed and your little one is already celebrating their first birthday. For me, being a mom, this milestone feels particularly significant. It’s a time to reflect on the incredible journey of parenthood, the challenges, the laughter, and the overwhelming love that grows every single day.
Skye’s first birthday came with its own unique charm and excitement. We had originally planned a big sky-themed bash with all the bells and whistles, but life got in the way—doctor’s appointments, school events, and last-minute trips threw a wrench into our plans. By the time we realized we needed to act fast, there were only seven days left until the big day. My husband was incredibly supportive, encouraging me to make it happen even though it seemed like a tall order. With no time to order fancy decorations or a custom cake, we decided to roll up our sleeves and get creative.
The first thing we did was send out a quick text to some friends asking if anyone had access to a cotton candy machine. Surprisingly, within hours, we had one secured. From there, the rest of the party planning fell into place. We made DIY mini cloud piñatas, filled them with colorful confetti, and hung them around the venue. For the snacks, we printed and folded popcorn boxes, adding a touch of personalization. Even the clouds of cotton candy were homemade, suspended delicately in the air for all the little guests to enjoy. And of course, we couldn’t forget the centerpiece—the smash cake. We created a cozy cloud-filled nook under a shady tree where Skylar could dig in. While he didn’t exactly dive headfirst into the cake, he did manage to stick a few toes in and lick some frosting. It was adorable and totally fine by me!
We hosted the party at a nearby park, which was perfect since it saved us from the stress of cleaning before and after the event. Plus, the playground provided endless entertainment for the kids while we focused on setting up. To keep things engaging, we also created a passport-style scavenger hunt for the kids to explore the park. It was a simple but fun way to incorporate the "sky" theme into their experience.
In addition to the party, we had a traditional pancake breakfast, which has become an annual tradition for all our kids’ birthdays. It’s always a sweet moment to gather around the table and share stories while enjoying pancakes smothered in syrup.
Looking back on the day, I’m reminded of how quickly life changes. Skye may not have fully understood what this day meant, but he certainly enjoyed himself. And honestly, that’s all that matters. Happy first birthday, sweet Skye! You’re loved beyond measure.
