The Danish Innovation Foundation announced that a joint research team at the University of Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet Hospital, Curasight ApS and FluoGuide IVS has successfully developed a self-luminous technology for cancer cells. The new technology that enables cancer cells to self-illuminate will help doctors accurately distinguish between cancer cells and rapid tissue, making surgery more effective and gentle, thereby increasing the survival rate of cancer patients.
At present, when surgeons perform surgery on cancer patients, they usually distinguish cancer cells from normal tissues by the feeling and judgment of doctors during surgery, but this is not an effective method. Many patients often have 15%-60% of cancer cells left in the patient after surgery, depending on the type of cancer and the location of the cancer. Although the remaining cancer cells need to continue to receive chemotherapy and radiation, it is not enough to remove all cancer cells. If all cancer cells can be removed more effectively during the surgery, the recovery of cancer patients will be significantly accelerated.
Animal experiments have shown that this technique can illuminate cancer cells so the surgeon can see the location of the cancer tissue. The study was done by injecting a liquid containing some special small molecules that bind to cancer cells. When subjected to near-infrared light, the molecules become self-luminous. Therefore, by installing a special camera on the operating table, the surgeon can switch between near-infrared and white light to accurately view the cancer cell tissue that must be removed.
The method now needs further development before it can be used in hospital clinical practice. In principle, this method can be used for all tumor types, especially for patients with certain cancers – patients with particularly difficult surgery or who need to retain more healthy tissue, such as when the tumor is distributed in the main area of ​​the throat or brain. . The method is expected to be tested in cancer patients within five years.
