Ministry of Health Announces the Prohibition of Adding Spices to More than 20 Kinds of Foods Including Pure Milk

The Ministry of Health announced yesterday the “Principles for the Use of Flavors and Flavors for Food (Consultation Draft)” (hereinafter referred to as the “Draft for Comment”). More than 20 kinds of foods including pure milk will be prohibited from adding flavorings and flavors. For dairy industry professionals, the "Consultation Draft" issued this time is another supplement to the dairy safety standards.

The "Draft for Comments" requires that all foods with flavorings and flavourings should be labelled in accordance with relevant national standards. Pure milk, fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh eggs, rice and other foods are strictly prohibited from adding flavorings and flavors.

The relevant person in charge of the Food Safety Coordination and Supervision Bureau of the Ministry of Health pointed out that the foods listed in the “Draft for Comments” are not necessary for “perfume”. Therefore, it is not allowed to add flavorings and flavors. Take pure milk as an example. If frankincense is added, It should be called sweet milk.

"Pure milk is the raw material of dairy products. Most companies do not add flavors and flavors when they produce and process pure milk," said Liu Xing, a staff member at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Spices are used only for seasoning. It is forbidden to add perfumes and flavors to pure milk and will not destroy the nutritional structure of pure milk. Similarly, pure milk added with spices will not increase its nutritional content.
