Artificial skin was successfully launched in Xi'an

On December 20, 2007, a groundbreaking development in medical technology was announced in Xi'an—China's first industrially produced artificial skin made through tissue engineering was officially launched. This innovative product is expected to be widely adopted in clinical settings early next year, offering an affordable solution for patients in need. The project leader, Jin Yan, a 44-year-old professor and doctoral supervisor at the Stomatological Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University, has dedicated over a decade to developing this life-changing technology. The artificial skin, which resembles slightly steamed tofu in texture, is manufactured using human skin cells. It features two layers—similar to natural skin—with both epidermal and dermal structures. Rich in growth factors and living cells, it offers excellent biocompatibility, color, and texture that closely mimic real skin. Its low immune rejection rate, quick healing time, and ease of use make it ideal for treating burns, ulcers, surgical wounds, and even old scars. The production process is efficient, with a single batch ready within ten days. Once mass-produced, the artificial skin comes in sealed packaging. To use it, the outer layer is removed, followed by careful cleaning and preparation under sterile conditions. The nylon film on both sides is then peeled off, and the skin is applied directly to the wound, covered with gauze. The entire process is simple and user-friendly, much like applying a common bandage. Priced significantly lower than similar products in the U.S., which cost around 200 yuan per square centimeter, this artificial skin will be accessible to the general public. With its affordability and effectiveness, it marks a major step forward in regenerative medicine and patient care. — Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
