Artificial skin was successfully launched in Xi'an

On December 20, 2007, a groundbreaking development in medical technology was announced in Xi'an—China's first industrially produced tissue engineering product, artificial skin, was officially launched. This innovative treatment is expected to be widely adopted in clinical settings early next year and is priced affordably for the general public. The project’s lead researcher, 44-year-old Jin Yan, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Stomatological Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University, has spent over a decade working on this advancement. The artificial skin, which resembles slightly steamed tofu in texture, is made from human skin and has a thickness of approximately 2 to 3 mm. According to Jin Yan, this product, named “An Body Skin,” is the only successful tissue engineering product developed in China so far. It can be mass-produced in factories and contains living cells and growth factors. It mimics the natural structure of human skin, with both an epidermis and dermis layer. It also matches real skin in color, texture, and biocompatibility, while offering low immune rejection, faster healing times, ease of use, and reduced scarring. This artificial skin can help treat various types of wounds, including burns, ulcers, surgical incisions, and even old scars. Its production process is quick, taking just ten days. Once ready, it comes in sealed packaging. To use it, the outer package is opened first, followed by the inner package under sterile conditions. The skin is then cleaned, any excess liquid removed, and the nylon layers on both sides are peeled off before being applied directly to the wound and covered with gauze. The entire process is simple and similar to using a regular bandage. In terms of cost, similar products in the U.S. currently range around 200 yuan per square centimeter. However, the price of this Chinese-made artificial skin will be significantly lower, making it accessible to ordinary people. This breakthrough not only marks a major step forward in medical technology but also brings hope and relief to patients in need of advanced wound care solutions.
