During the autumn, pig farming requires more attention to feed storage and management. While regular feeding practices remain important, it's crucial to properly store both pig feed and fertilizers. The cooler weather and ample feed availability in autumn create ideal conditions for pig growth. Sweet potatoes, peanut hulls, and bean stalks can be fermented or crushed and used as excellent feed sources. Similarly, potato tubers and legume pods can be dried and ground for feeding. However, with the rainy weather in autumn, over-harvesting and improper handling of green feed can lead to spoilage. Fresh grasses and vegetables contain high levels of nitrates. To prevent this, it's advisable to ferment or soak the green feed into sauerkraut. This not only reduces nitrite levels but also enhances flavor and nutritional value. The process involves washing the grass, vegetables, melons, and leaves, then packing them tightly into a container. Once filled to about 80%, cover with straw and press with stones—no water added. After a few days, fill the container with water to create an anaerobic environment. After another day of fermentation, the feed is ready for pigs. Fermented green feed is not only more palatable but also easier to digest and more nutritious. Note that undetoxified rapeseed cake should not exceed 10% of the diet, and legumes should be cooked for better protein absorption. Gradually increase the amount of feed to help pigs adapt. Parasites are a common issue in autumn, with species like coccidia, roundworms, and whipworms causing significant harm. These parasites can lead to poor growth and reduced feed efficiency. Regular fecal tests using the sugar floatation method can help detect infestations. Implementing an all-in, all-out feeding system, along with thorough cleaning and disinfection of barns, is essential. Disinfectants like "complex aldehydes" are effective against coccidial oocysts. Keeping pigs in clean, dry environments and avoiding pets like cats and dogs helps reduce parasite transmission. Abamectin is a commonly used deworming drug, available in powder, tablet, or injectable forms. Sows should be dewormed 14–21 days before farrowing, and again 14 days before breeding. Boars should be treated in spring and autumn. For finishing pigs, a single deworming at 35–40 days of age is usually sufficient. Green feed may carry parasite eggs, so it’s best to wash it thoroughly and apply insect repellent two months before feeding. Autumn is the golden period for pig growth, so proper feeding is key. Combine concentrates, roughage, and green feed in balanced proportions. Crush the feed to aid digestion. Ensure the diet is nutritionally complete and palatable. Whether feeding wet mixtures or allowing free-choice access to chopped green feed, avoid excessive moisture. A 0.1% potassium permanganate solution can help prevent piglet anemia. Dry feed must be accompanied by plenty of clean water, especially for sows and nursing pigs. Green feed should make up around 40% of the diet, with 10% glutinous rice cake optionally added. Feed concentrate first, then green feed four times daily, ideally within 30 minutes each time. Pelleted feed offers better taste, digestibility, and growth rates compared to flour. However, many farmers still mix pellets with water or cook them, which reduces their nutritional value. Proper use of pelleted feed ensures optimal performance and cost-effectiveness.
