How to Improve the Feeding and Management of Autumn Pigs: A Practical Guide for Farmers
Autumn is a crucial season for pig growth, offering ideal temperatures and abundant feed resources. However, proper feeding and management are essential to ensure healthy development and avoid common issues. Below are some key tips for farmers to consider during this period.
**Feed Storage and Poisoning Prevention**
In autumn, it's important not only to manage feed properly but also to store pig feed and fertilizers correctly. Green feeds like sweet potatoes, peanut hulls, and bean stalks can be fermented or crushed and fed to pigs. However, due to the rainy weather, improper storage of green feed can lead to spoilage. Fresh grasses and vegetables contain high levels of nitrates, which can turn into toxic nitrites under bacterial action. This can cause poisoning or even suffocation in pigs.
To reduce this risk, farmers can ferment or soak green feeds to make sauerkraut, which lowers nitrite content and improves taste and nutrition. The process involves washing the greens, compacting them in a container, covering with straw, and pressing with stones. After a few days, fill the container with water to create an anaerobic environment. After about a day of fermentation, the feed is ready for pigs.
**Parasite Control**
Autumn is also a peak time for parasites such as coccidia, roundworms, and whipworms, which can severely affect pig growth. To prevent infestations, regular fecal tests should be conducted using methods like sugar flotation. Implementing an all-in, all-out feeding system and maintaining clean, dry environments are essential. Disinfectants like "complex aldehydes" can help kill oocysts.
Deworming is another critical step. Abamectin is commonly used, and sows should be dewormed 14–21 days before farrowing. Boars should be treated twice a year, while finishing pigs can be dewormed once at 35–40 days old. Additionally, green feeds should be washed thoroughly before feeding to remove parasite eggs.
**Scientific Feeding Practices**
Feeding in autumn should balance concentrates, roughage, and green materials. Crushed feed improves digestion, and the water content in wet feeding should not be excessive. Adding 0.1% potassium permanganate solution can help prevent piglet anemia. Dry-fed pigs need ample clean water, with the daily intake being four times that of dry feed.
Green feed should make up about 40% of the diet, with 10% glutinous rice cake added for extra energy. Feed concentrate first, then offer green material four times a day, ideally within 30 minutes each time. Pelleted feed offers better palatability and digestibility, but many farmers still mix it with water or cook it, which reduces its nutritional value.
By following these practices, farmers can maximize growth and health during the golden season of autumn pig farming.
