Meet Your Local Farmer: The Salad Farm

Since 2013, Ronald and Sonya have been committed to growing a variety of fresh produce. They operate a small-scale organic farm all year round, ensuring no harmful chemicals are used. Their dedication extends to picking and delivering their harvest on the same day, guaranteeing customers receive the freshest products possible. Located in Bolivar, Missouri, The Salad Farm has become a beloved local supplier. MaMa Jean’s is thrilled to support such dedicated farmers by featuring their seasonal offerings like crisp lettuces, spinach, and cilantro.

Here’s what Ronald and Sonya shared:

What inspired you to start farming?

We began planting vegetables like lettuce and other greens just for ourselves. Over time, we realized we had grown more than we could consume, so we decided to try selling them at a local farmers' market. That decision eventually led us to focus solely on farming. It wasn’t long before a friend introduced us to MaMa Jean’s, and now we’re proud to supply them as well.

What kinds of crops do you grow?

Our primary focus is on leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. We also cultivate root vegetables like carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes, along with herbs including cilantro and green onions. During the warmer months, we expand our range to include tomatoes, sweet peppers, okra, cucumbers, and fruits like blackberries. All of this is grown on just two acres, where we utilize seven high tunnels to maximize production.

How do you manage weeds and pests without chemicals?

Organic farming requires manual effort. We regularly pull weeds by hand or use hoes, and sometimes lay down plastic mulch to suppress weed growth. While it’s labor-intensive, it’s essential for maintaining our organic standards.

How do you view your role within the community?

Providing fresh, healthy, and pesticide-free produce is central to what we do. Our days start early and end late as we plant, weed, harvest, and till the soil to ensure a steady supply. Farming is truly a family endeavor—our children help out, and friends often pitch in when needed.

Any advice for new gardeners?

One key lesson we’ve learned is the importance of investing in quality seeds—they may cost more upfront, but they yield better results. Also, don’t get discouraged if progress seems slow. Persistence, patience, and hard work will pay off over time. You’ll gain valuable experience, and the rewards are worth it!
