Planting Phalaenopsis in Winter Note Five Aspects

The ideal temperature for the growth of Phalaenopsis orchids is between 25°C and 30°C during the day, with nighttime temperatures ranging from 18°C to 20°C. It's important to note that temperatures above 32°C can be harmful, as they may hinder both growth and the formation of flower buds. At night, the temperature should not drop below 15°C, as this can also negatively impact the plant. Keeping the orchid in a slightly warmer environment can actually promote better flowering.
Phalaenopsis orchids thrive in high humidity, ideally between 70% and 80%. To maintain this level, it’s recommended to mist the surrounding area regularly. However, the moisture content of the growing medium should be carefully controlled. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while allowing the substrate to dry slightly encourages the development of new roots, which is essential for healthy growth.
Light is crucial for Phalaenopsis, but direct sunlight can be too intense. Using a shade net during bright days helps protect the plant while still allowing enough light for photosynthesis. When the temperature rises or humidity becomes too high, opening the greenhouse vents improves air circulation, preventing issues like fungal infections.
Fertilization should follow the “little and often†principle. A diluted solution of compound fertilizer (1,500 times) combined with boric acid (5,000 times) can be applied, followed by a full dose of 1,500 times compound fertilizer every other week. Since Phalaenopsis has fleshy roots, it benefits greatly from potassium-rich fertilizers, which support strong root development and overall plant health.
To prevent pests and diseases, it’s important to disinfect the greenhouse before introducing new seedlings. Regular applications of fungicides—ideally once a week—are advised. Spraying should be done on sunny days whenever possible to ensure the chemicals work effectively and reduce the risk of disease spread. Maintaining good hygiene and monitoring the plants closely will help keep them healthy and vibrant.
