Chlorantraniliprole Controlling Rice Leaf Roller

20% Chlorantraniliprole Suspension is a cutting-edge, ultra-efficient insecticide developed by DuPont. This innovative product works through a completely new mode of action, offering superior control over lepidopteran pests such as the diamondback moth. It exhibits low cross-resistance with existing insecticides and has lower toxicity to fish, bees, aquatic organisms, beneficial insects, and mammals, making it environmentally friendly and safe for ecosystems. In 2008, agricultural protection stations in Jiangsu Province conducted trials and field demonstrations of this insecticide against rice leaf roller, achieving excellent overall results. The testing involved two main components: community trials and field demonstrations. The community experiments were carried out in Zhangjiagang and Jiangyan, with four treatment groups: 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension (10 ml), 5% fipronil suspension (50 ml), 40% chlorpyrifos (50 ml), and a blank control. Field demonstrations took place in Zhangjiagang, Jiangyan, and Fuyang, using 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension at a rate of 10 ml per acre. In Zhangjiagang, the control agents used were 5% fipronil suspension and 32% propofol flomberine EC, each applied at 50 ml per acre. In Jiangyan, the control agents included 20% methomyl, chlorpyrifos WP, and 16% fipronil chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate, with dosages of 100 grams and 120 milliliters respectively. In Fuyang, the control agent was 5% fipronil suspension at 50 ml per acre. All treatments were applied during the peak period of the youngest larvae of the fifth-generation (third generation) rice leaf roller. The results from the plot tests showed that after applying chlorantraniliprole, the insecticidal and leaf-preserving effects were significantly higher. Three days post-treatment, the insecticidal effect reached 79.2%, which was better than the control agents. By 7–15 days after treatment, the insecticidal effect ranged between 94.3% and 96.29%, and the leaf-protecting effect was between 94.4% and 96.42%. The field demonstration results also showed that chlorantraniliprole provided more than 92.4% insecticidal and leaf-protecting effects within 7–15 days, with a significantly better performance compared to single agents like fipronil and its combinations, such as 32% profenofosin fluoride EC and 20% methomyl chlorpyrifos WP. Overall, the test results demonstrated that chlorantraniliprole is highly effective in controlling rice leaf roller, with a long-lasting effect. Its insecticidal and leaf-preserving performance surpassed the control agents. It is recommended to apply 10 ml of 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension per acre starting from the egg-hatching stage of the rice leaf roller up to the peak of young larvae. However, it is important to note that the product is highly toxic to silkworms, so special care must be taken in areas where rice and mulberry are grown together to ensure safe application.
