20% Chlorantraniliprole Suspension is a cutting-edge, ultra-efficient insecticide developed by DuPont. This innovative product introduces a novel mode of action, offering superior control over lepidopteran pests such as the diamondback moth. It exhibits reduced cross-resistance compared to existing insecticides and has lower toxicity to aquatic organisms, fish, bees, beneficial insects, and mammals, making it environmentally friendly. In 2008, agricultural protection agencies in Jiangsu Province conducted trials and demonstrations of this insecticide on rice leaf roller, achieving excellent results in integrated application.
The trial involved two components: community testing and field demonstration. The community experiment was carried out in Zhangjiagang and Jiangyan, with four treatments: 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension (10 ml), 5% fipronil suspension (50 ml), 40% chlorpyrifos (50 ml), and a blank control. Field demonstrations took place in Zhangjiagang, Jiangyan, and Fuyang, using 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension at a rate of 10 ml per acre. In Zhangjiagang, the control agents were 5% fipronil suspension and 32% profenofos flumethrin EC, each applied at 50 ml per acre. In Jiangyan, the control agents included 20% methomyl, chlorpyrifos WP, and 16% fipronil chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate, with doses of 100 grams and 120 milliliters respectively. In Fuyang, the control agent was 5% fipronil suspension at 50 ml per acre. All treatments were applied during the peak period of the third generation of rice leaf roller's youngest larvae.
The plot test results showed that after 3–15 days of treatment with chlorantraniliprole, the insecticidal and leaf-preserving effects were significantly higher. Three days post-treatment, the insecticidal effect reached 79.2%, which was better than the control agents. By 7–15 days, the insecticidal effect ranged from 94.3% to 96.29%, and the leaf-protecting effect was between 94.4% and 96.42%. In the field demonstration, the insecticidal and leaf-protecting effects exceeded 92.4% seven to fifteen days after treatment, showing a much better performance than single-agent fipronil or its mixtures, including 32% profenofos flumethrin EC and 20% methomyl chlorpyrifos WP.
Overall, the results demonstrated that chlorantraniliprole is highly effective in controlling rice leaf roller, with a long-lasting effect. Its insecticidal and leaf-preserving performance surpasses traditional control agents. It is recommended to apply 10 ml of 20% chlorantraniliprole suspension per acre from the egg-hatching stage of rice leaf roller until the peak of young larvae. However, due to its high toxicity to silkworms, special attention should be given to safe usage in areas where rice and mulberry are grown together.
