German experts confirm that acupuncture can lower blood pressure

Release date: 2007-06-05

In a groundbreaking presentation at the 73rd German Cardiovascular Medicine Annual Meeting, held in Mannheim from April 12 to 14, German medical experts revealed that traditional Chinese acupuncture may have a temporary and noticeable effect on lowering blood pressure. The findings were presented by Dr. Frank Flaxkampf, a renowned cardiovascular specialist, who highlighted the results of a six-week observational study involving 150 patients with hypertension.

The research, led by a team including Dr. Eve, involved dividing participants into two groups. One group received genuine acupuncture at designated pressure points, while the other underwent "sham" acupuncture, where needles were placed at incorrect locations. The results showed a significant drop in blood pressure among those who received proper acupuncture, while the control group saw no such improvement.

Despite these promising findings, Dr. Eve noted that the effects of acupuncture on blood pressure were not long-lasting, as patients' readings tended to return to baseline levels after treatment ceased. This suggests that acupuncture might serve more as a complementary therapy rather than a standalone solution for managing hypertension.

The annual meeting attracted over 5,000 medical professionals and researchers from 25 countries, showcasing the growing interest in integrative approaches to health care. With the global rise in chronic conditions like high blood pressure, studies such as this continue to spark discussions about the potential role of alternative therapies in modern medicine.
