German experts confirm that acupuncture can lower blood pressure

Release date: 2007-06-05

In a groundbreaking presentation at the 73rd German Cardiovascular Medicine Annual Meeting held in Mannheim from April 12 to 14, renowned German cardiovascular expert Dr. Frank Flaxkampf shared compelling findings about the potential of traditional Chinese acupuncture in managing hypertension. According to the research conducted by Dr. Eve and her team, acupuncture was found to temporarily and significantly reduce blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure.

The study involved 150 participants with hypertension, who were divided into two groups. One group received genuine acupuncture treatment targeting specific points known for their therapeutic effects, while the other group underwent a placebo-like procedure where needles were placed on incorrect points. The results revealed that the group receiving proper acupuncture experienced a noticeable drop in blood pressure, whereas the placebo group showed no significant changes.

Dr. Eve also noted that the effects of acupuncture on blood pressure were not long-lasting, as patients' readings tended to return to baseline levels after the treatment period ended. Despite this, the findings sparked considerable interest among over 5,000 medical professionals and researchers from 25 countries attending the conference.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that alternative therapies, when properly applied, may complement conventional treatments for chronic conditions like hypertension. While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and long-term benefits, the results presented at the meeting highlight the importance of exploring integrative approaches in modern medicine.
