Shed "silk chicken rotation" cleverly increased income

In recent years, Marantun Town in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, has made significant progress by scientifically adjusting its agricultural structure. The town has introduced innovative techniques such as raising larvae in greenhouses, which has led to higher economic returns for local farmers. To ensure the efficient use of resources, the town organized technical training sessions and invited agricultural experts to provide guidance. These efforts helped sericulture farmers make better use of their idle silkworm sheds. During the off-season, farmers now use these sheds to raise one or two broiler chickens, significantly boosting their income. On average, each shed can generate an additional 3,000 yuan per year. For many families engaged in sericulture, annual incomes have exceeded 10,000 yuan, providing a more stable and diversified source of income. Moreover, the integration of silkworm and chicken farming has proven to be highly sustainable. Silkworm droppings and chicken manure are both rich in nutrients and can be used as organic fertilizers, enhancing soil quality and promoting crop growth. This multi-purpose use of the sheds not only increases productivity but also improves efficiency and environmental sustainability. To date, the town has successfully raised over 200,000 livestock and poultry, with about 300,000 currently in operation. As a result, the income of sericulture households has increased by more than 1.3 million yuan. This model has become a successful example of how traditional agriculture can be transformed through innovation, diversification, and resource optimization. It demonstrates the potential for rural development and improved livelihoods through smart agricultural practices.
