The disease is a highly contagious infection that affects all strains of the plant. It primarily targets the trunk and main branches, posing a threat to both young seedlings and mature trees. Infected plants typically develop small, circular blisters near the lenticels, initially appearing as tiny spots that gradually enlarge into distinct, blister-like lesions. These blisters contain a light brown liquid, which turns dark brown once the blister ruptures and the fluid oozes out. Over time, the affected areas shrink and fall off, leaving behind a longitudinal crack in the center. In severe cases, the lesions on the trunk become dense and merge together, causing the bark to turn brown and rot. As the infection progresses, the plant weakens and eventually dies.
The disease is most active between April and May, with a second peak occurring in late September. This seasonal pattern suggests that environmental conditions during these periods are particularly favorable for the pathogen's spread and development.
To manage the disease, it is essential to promptly remove and destroy any dead or heavily infected plants to prevent further contamination. A fungicidal treatment can be applied by diluting carbendazim or trichlorfon at a ratio of 20-30 times and thoroughly spraying the entire plant. For best results, this treatment should be repeated 3 to 4 times within a one-week period. Consistent monitoring and early intervention are key to controlling the spread of the disease and protecting the health of the plants.
