First, site selection and construction of aquaculture ponds are crucial. The farm should be located near a reliable water source—fresh, clean, and suitable for irrigation and drainage. The soil type should be neutral to slightly acidic, either clayey or sandy loam, which helps maintain water quality. The location should receive ample sunlight and have convenient transportation access, along with stable electricity supply. The pond area typically ranges from 100 to 250 square meters.
To prevent escape, the pond should be surrounded by a 40-cm-high wall made of bricks and cement. Alternatively, plastic boards or window screens can be used for fencing. These materials are cost-effective and efficient. The screen should be buried into hard soil, with the top extending 20 cm above the water surface. A central gutter runs through the middle of the pond, positioned 30–40 cm below the pool floor. The pond depth is usually between 80 to 100 cm, with a consistent water depth of 30 to 50 cm. An overflow pipe is placed at the normal water level, while the water inlet is set 20 cm above the water surface. All inlets, outlets, and overflow pipes should be covered with wire mesh to prevent mud from escaping. The outlet pipe is installed at the bottom of the ditch and is typically sealed with cement to ensure stability.
Second, pond water disinfection and fertilization are essential before starting the culture. Before filling the pond with water, an initial layer of 10 cm of water is added. Then, 75 kg of lime is mixed into a slurry and applied at a rate of 1 kg per 667 square meters (1 acre) to disinfect the water. Afterward, sufficient base fertilizer is added to enrich the water body. The water transparency should be maintained at around 15 cm to support healthy aquatic life and optimal growth conditions for the species.
