The "Longgui," a strange and wonderfully grown natural animal

"Osmanthus" is one of the most significant plants in China, deeply rooted in its culture and horticultural heritage. Globally, there are 32 species of Osmanthus, and out of these, 27 are found in China. As a member of the genus *Osmanthus*, China is also considered the center of diversity for this plant family. With over 2,000 years of cultivation history, it's no surprise that China is home to the greatest number of sweet-scented osmanthus varieties in the world. More than 100 cultivars have been identified, including many rare and unique ones. One such variety is "Chinese Longgui," which stands out for its remarkable natural form and symbolic meaning. Is the growth pattern of the laurel tree just a coincidence? Or is it a natural design that mirrors ancient Chinese symbolism? The *Osmanthus fragrans* 'Zhonghualonggui' is a shrub that typically grows up to 3 meters tall, with vigorous growth and naturally curved branches that resemble a "wandering dragon." Its leaves are long and elliptical, averaging 8.2 cm in length and 2.9 cm in width. The leaf tips are pointed and slightly raised, while the edges are serrated. The base is wedge-shaped, and the new shoots display a striking reddish-purple color. As they mature, the petioles turn purple-green. The buds are light green, and the flowers are yellow-white, emitting a strong, pleasant fragrance. China is not only the birthplace of sweet-scented osmanthus but also the homeland of the "dragon." In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes power, authority, prosperity, and hope. What makes this variety even more fascinating is that nature itself created "Chinese Longgui," giving it a deep and meaningful presence in the landscape. Art is a human creation, but nature has its own way of shaping beauty. Chinese bonsai artists have developed various styles, such as the Yang School, Su School, and Chuan School. These styles often involve carefully crafted bends and twists, requiring years or even decades of effort to perfect. However, "Chinese Longgui" doesn't need artificial shaping—it naturally forms elegant curves, resembling a "driving dragon." This natural form makes it a unique and playful art object. Nature is also a genius. The "Spring Longgui" exhibits a fascinating growth pattern: after the sprouts lignify, the tender purple shoots begin to droop, creating a graceful curve. The terminal dominance causes the top to grow upward again, forming a natural "dragon body." Over time, the shoots turn green and harden, creating a distinct shape. Some branches develop multiple bends, mimicking the famous "three bends with nine turns" style. After a few years, the leaves fall off, revealing "naked dragons" with intricate forms. Each "Longhua" tree has its own unique characteristics. You can see dragons that stretch toward the sky, others that look downward, or those that seem to run into the sea. Some appear to be dancing between the leaves, creating a sense of movement and life. These natural forms are truly masterpieces of nature. While some enthusiasts may choose to prune and shape them further, the beauty of "Chinese Longgui" lies in its natural expression. Recently, a new mutation was discovered in the "Chinese Dragon"—a golden shoot variant. It shares similar biological traits with the original, but its golden color gives it a fresh and unique appearance. For now, we call it "Golden Dragon," while the original with purple shoots is referred to as "Red Dragon." This discovery highlights the balance between stability and variation in nature, showcasing the creativity of "Heavenly God" and the wonders of the natural world. China holds great potential, and the extraordinary "Chinese Longgui" is a promising variety with endless possibilities. Its natural beauty and cultural significance make it a true treasure of the country.
