Yangzhou Goose breeding technology essentials

Under the guidance of Professor Zhao Wanli from the College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine at Yangzhou University, I have spent many years working with Yangzhou goose breeding and have accumulated valuable experience. Below are some key techniques that have proven effective in raising this breed. **First, Management of Goslings** 1. After goslings arrive at the farm, it's important to provide them with water first. Mix 25°C warm water with multivitamins, glucose, and gentamicin (10,000 units per gosling). Ensure all goslings drink within one hour. 2. For goslings aged 1–3 days, maintain a brooding temperature of 28–30°C with 60–65% humidity. Place 20–25 goslings per square meter and use 990 broken geese feed to ensure access to clean drinking water. 3. From day 4 to 10, keep the house temperature at 25–28°C and humidity at 60–65%. Reduce density to 15–20 goslings per square meter. Introduce 990 goose pellets gradually, adding a small amount of sand for better digestion. 4. Between days 11 and 20, lower the temperature to 20–25°C, maintaining 60–70% humidity. Keep 12–15 goslings per square meter. Feed them green forage and allow grazing before feeding. Avoid overfeeding during this period. 5. From day 21 to 30, maintain a temperature of 18–20°C with 65–70% humidity. Keep 8–12 goslings per square meter. Focus on green feed, supplementing with 6% concentrate feed. Allow full-day grazing. **Second, Feeding and Management of Adult Geese** 1. For geese aged 30–50 days, focus on grazing as their main feeding method. Provide one meal per day, supplemented with 6–8% of 999 meat goose fattening concentrate. Before slaughter, allow geese to swim and feed outside the barn. Sort geese by size and deworm them using avermectin prior to fattening. 2. From day 50 onward, increase the concentrate feed to 15–20% of the diet. Yangzhou geese are typically raised for 70–80 days, depending on market conditions and growth rate. **Third, Grass Cultivation Techniques** To support goose farming, mix ryegrass and bitter leeks. Use multi-flowered ryegrass in the fall and bitter leeks in spring and summer. One mu of high-quality grass can support 250–300 geese. 1. **Seeding Rate**: For multi-flowered ryegrass, sow 2–3 kg per acre if germination and purity meet standards. Bitter leeks require about 0.5–0.6 kg per mu. 2. **Sowing Methods**: Ryegrass is best sown using a drill, with rows spaced 20–30 cm apart and covered with 2–3 cm of soil. Bitter leeks can be sown directly or transplanted, with spacing of 25–30 cm and covered with 1–2 cm of soil. 3. **Sowing Time**: Ryegrass is best sown in autumn, ideally in late September, no later than mid-October. It can also be sown in spring, before the end of March. Bitter leeks are best planted in early spring, between February and March, as planting in April significantly reduces yield. 4. **Harvesting and Use**: Harvest ryegrass when it reaches 30–60 cm in height, leaving 10 cm for regrowth. Bitter leeks should be harvested when they reach about 50 cm, leaving 15–20 cm for continued growth. By following these practices, breeders can achieve higher productivity and healthier flocks, making Yangzhou goose farming both efficient and sustainable.
