The US military plans to develop "reading mind" to crack the EEG with a computer
Release date: 2008-08-22
For patients who have suffered brain injuries—whether from a stroke, combat trauma, or other causes—communicating with doctors can be extremely challenging. In an effort to better understand their thoughts and improve communication, researchers in the United States are exploring the use of EEG technology to "read" the minds of these individuals. This groundbreaking approach could open new doors for those who are unable to speak or express themselves verbally.
According to a report by U.S. media on August 17th, a research team from the University of California, Irvine, has been working on a system that involves patients wearing a special cap equipped with electrodes. These sensors monitor brainwave activity and send the data to a computer, where scientists attempt to interpret what the patient is thinking. The process begins with the patient silently choosing a word from a list provided by the researchers, then focusing on it. The EEG captures the brain's response, and scientists try to decode the selected word.
Once this initial phase is successful, the next step is to expand the range of thoughts the system can interpret. However, experts believe it may take several years before the technology can accurately interpret complex thoughts or even full sentences. John Parker, one of the researchers involved in the project, emphasized that the current stage is still very early. The long-term goal is to develop a "mind-awareness" software that would allow patients with speech difficulties to communicate their thoughts without speaking.
While the potential benefits of this technology are immense, there are also concerns about its misuse. Since part of the funding comes from the U.S. military, some worry that such a system might be used for interrogations or other unethical purposes. Despite these concerns, the researchers remain focused on using the technology to help patients regain their ability to communicate and connect with the world around them.
