Early spring orchard extermination method

In the old saying, it goes: "To eat pears, you must scrape the bark." This advice is quite wise. The rough bark, cracks, and crevices of fruit trees often hide various pests such as Pyrosphaeridae, Hawthorn spider mites, Myzus persicae, Mythica spp., Myxidae, and Pyriacidae. Before the fruit trees start to bud in early spring, it's crucial to thoroughly remove the rough bark and cut grooves on the stems, especially at the branches. This practice can eliminate a significant number of overwintering pests. When scraping the bark, aim to remove only the light brown outer layer, not the green or white inner tissue. While scraping, place a plastic sheet under the tree to collect the bark and debris, then dispose of them by burying deeply or burning. For trees affected by rot or blight, apply Fumei arsenic or lime sulfur after scraping to prevent and treat the diseases.
Pruning trees in early spring isn't just an important agricultural practice for improving soil conditions and boosting fruit production—it's also an effective way to control overwintering pests. Deep plowing turns pests like peach borers and peach pit worms, along with pathogens, to the surface where they can be frozen, dried, or eaten by natural enemies. Additionally, dead branches, rolled leaves, and weeds that harbor pests such as fly moths, aphids, and red spiders are buried underground, preventing them from emerging normally.
Before the overwintering larvae become active, cover the area around the tree with a mulch film. Cut the film to fit the crown projection and make a slit from one edge to the center. Pull the slit open along the trunk and bury the edges of the film underground, leaving about 20 centimeters exposed. Secure the film with a cord tied to the trunk (the film can remain in place until early September). This mulching technique significantly reduces damage from pests like red spider mites and peach borers.
During dormancy, spraying deciduous fruit trees with diesel oil containing 4% to 5% concentration, or a 5-degree Baume lime sulfur solution, effectively controls various pests such as scale insects, red spider mites, apple rot, pear scab, and grape black spot disease. These treatments have proven to be highly effective when applied correctly.
