Short late grapefruit and its cultivation techniques

“Dwarf Night Pomelo” is a newly developed pummelo variety created by a renowned fruit tree research institute in Suining City, Sichuan Province. The institute provides free technical data and instructional VCDs to support growers. Regional trials across the country have shown that this variety matures quickly—within 2 to 3 years after planting. It is known for its high yield, stable production, superior quality, and late ripening period. In 2007, it was officially granted a new plant variety certificate (certificate number) by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Dwarf Night Pomelo has a short and compact canopy, reaching a height of less than 1 meter within 3 years of planting. It begins producing fruit in the fourth year, with an average yield of 5,000 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters). The fruit is large, without cracking, with single fruits weighing between 2 to 2.5 kg, and some reaching up to 3.5 kg. Smaller fruits weigh around 1.5 kg. The flesh is yellow, crisp, juicy, and has a balanced sweet-sour flavor with a strong aroma. The fruit typically ripens between January and February of the following year. Cultivation techniques for the Dwarf Night Pomelo include: First, the best time to plant is during spring or autumn. Spring planting is recommended from February to March, while autumn planting should be done from September to November. In regions like Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan, where winter temperatures can be low, planting in early spring (February to March) is ideal. If planting in the fall, it's essential to cover the entire tree with a plastic film tent before frost arrives. Surrounding the base with clay helps prevent freezing and retains moisture, improving survival rates for young plants. Second, the suitable soil for planting is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. This variety thrives in such conditions and can produce high yields. It has large, thick leaves that are dark green and highly drought-resistant, making it particularly well-suited for cultivation on hilly land. Third, the ideal temperature range for growing this pomelo is below 800 meters above sea level, with an annual average temperature of over 16.5°C, minimum temperatures not dropping below -3°C, at least 1,000 hours of annual sunshine, and an accumulated temperature of more than 4,800°C. Fourth, the planting method involves initial dense planting, with a spacing of 0.6 meters by 1 meter. After one year, the seedlings are transplanted into the field during spring or autumn of the second year, ensuring a survival rate of over 95%. This approach promotes faster growth, easier management, and earlier fruiting. The final planting spacing is usually 2 meters by 3 meters or 3 meters by 3 meters.
