"Dwarf Night Pomelo" is a newly developed pummelo variety created by a renowned fruit tree research institute in Suining City, Sichuan Province. The institute provides free technical resources, including detailed data and instructional VCDs. Regional trials across the country have demonstrated that this variety begins bearing fruit within 2 to 3 years after planting. It stands out for its high yield, stable production, excellent fruit quality, and late ripening period. In 2007, it was officially granted a new plant variety certificate (certificate number) by the Ministry of Agriculture.
This dwarf variety has a short, compact canopy, and after being planted for three years, the tree height remains under one meter. It starts producing fruit in its fourth year, with an average yield of 5,000 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters). The fruits are large, non-cracking, with single fruit weights ranging from 2 to 2.5 kg, and some reaching up to 3.5 kg. Smaller fruits weigh around 1.5 kg. The flesh is yellow, crisp, juicy, and offers a balanced sweet-sour flavor with a strong aroma. The fruit typically ripens between January and February of the following year.
The cultivation techniques for this dwarf pomelo include:
First, the best time to plant is during spring or autumn. Spring planting should take place between February and March, while autumn planting is ideal from September to November. In regions like Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan, where winter temperatures can be low, it's recommended to plant in early spring. If planting in the fall, cover the entire tree with plastic film to protect it from frost. Surround the base with clay to insulate and retain moisture, which helps the seedlings survive better.
Second, the soil should be slightly acidic or alkaline, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. This variety thrives in such conditions and can produce high yields. Its leaves are large, thick, and dark green, giving it strong drought resistance. It is particularly well-suited for growing on hilly land.
Third, the ideal temperature range for planting is below 800 meters above sea level, with an annual average temperature of at least 16.5°C, minimum temperatures not below -3°C, over 1,000 hours of annual sunshine, and a total accumulated temperature of more than 4,800°C.
Fourth, planting methods and spacing are crucial. After purchasing the seedlings, they should be planted densely in the first year, with a row spacing of 0.6 meters by 1 meter. In the second year, transplant them into the soil during spring or autumn, ensuring a survival rate of over 95%. Dense planting allows for easier management, efficient fertilization, and faster growth, leading to earlier fruiting. The recommended spacing is either 2 meters by 3 meters or 3 meters by 3 meters.
