For successful family propagation of flowering plants, using pot cuttings is the most practical and effective method. The best time for cutting is typically between April to May or August to September, depending on your local climate and the ideal temperature range of 18-20°C. It’s important to align the cutting schedule with the plant's natural growth cycle for optimal results.
When preparing the growing medium, it should be well-draining and aerated. A good mix includes sand, perlite, and composted soil, or a combination of coarse sand, mature soil, and expanded perlite. Before use, these materials should be sterilized—sun-drying is an effective and natural method to eliminate pathogens and pests.
Cuttings can be taken during spring or autumn pruning. Choose healthy, disease-free shoots that are about 8 cm long. Make a slanted cut just below a node (about 0.2 cm), allow the cut ends to dry slightly, and then dip them in rooting hormone to encourage root development. Remove the lower leaves, but leave 1–2 top leaves. If the leaves are large, you can trim them by about one-third to reduce water loss.
To plant the cuttings, first make a small hole in the soil with a bamboo stick, then insert the cutting and gently press the soil around it to ensure good contact. Place the pot in a cool, shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight. Water sparingly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Roots usually develop within about two weeks under suitable conditions.
Once the new growth reaches 15 cm, pinch back the tips to encourage branching. Apply a diluted nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium liquid fertilizer, or use organic options like composted manure or diluted fish emulsion. This helps the plant grow strong and healthy, and with proper care, it can bloom in winter or the following spring.
