Pre-marketing fattening technology

To improve the breeding efficiency of quails before they are sold, a short-term fattening period of 2-3 weeks is recommended. Quails typically reach sexual maturity at 7 weeks of age. Males can be fattened starting at 5 weeks old without being used for breeding purposes. If the egg production rate falls below 30%, the laying hens should be culled after a fattening period and sold. These hens are usually kept for 1 to 1.5 years before being removed from the breeding stock. For effective fattening, quails should be housed in specially designed fattening boxes. These multi-tiered boxes have an area of 0.3 square meters per layer and a height of 10-12 centimeters to prevent them from climbing over each other. The front and back of the box are enclosed with fences that allow the quails to extend their heads to access food and water. The sides and top of the box are made of fiberboard, while the bottom is covered with a 1 cm mesh wire to ensure proper ventilation and cleanliness. The environment for the quails should be dimly lit and quiet, with an indoor temperature maintained between 18-25°C. This helps reduce stress and promotes better growth. During the fattening period, exercise should be limited to increase the density of the flock, with approximately 30-40 quails per box. It's important to keep males and females separate to avoid unnecessary chasing and mating, which can waste energy and reduce overall productivity. Feeding during the fattening phase should focus on carbohydrate-rich feeds such as corn, broken rice, wheat bran, and rice, which should make up 75-80% of the diet. Protein feed should be reduced to around 18%. A 0.5% salt addition to the feed can encourage more drinking, and some green feed should also be included. Feed should be provided 4-6 times daily, both day and night, ensuring that the quails eat enough and that clean water is always available. After 2-3 weeks of proper fattening, the quails should weigh between 120-140 grams. To check their readiness for sale, examine the wing feathers—when the root feathers are fully developed and the skin appears white or light yellow, the quails are ready to be marketed.
