To improve breeding efficiency, it is recommended to implement a short-term fattening period of 2-3 weeks before the market listing of quails. Quails reach sexual maturity at around 7 weeks of age. Males can be fattened as early as 5 weeks old without being used for breeding purposes. If the egg production rate falls below 30%, the breeding females that have laid eggs for 1 to 1.5 years should be culled and sold after fattening. Quails should be housed in specially designed fattening boxes. These are multi-tiered with each compartment measuring 0.3 square meters and having a height of 10-12 centimeters to prevent them from climbing over one another. The front and back of the box are enclosed with fencing, allowing the quails to extend their heads to eat and drink. The sides and top are made of fiberboard, while the bottom is covered with a wire mesh with 1 cm square holes for proper ventilation and waste management. The environment should be dimly lit and quiet, ideally maintained at a temperature between 18°C and 25°C. To increase breeding density, exercise should be limited, and about 30-40 quails per box can be raised. It is important to keep males and females separate to avoid unnecessary chasing and mating, which can lead to energy loss. Feeding should focus on carbohydrate-rich ingredients such as corn, broken rice, wheat bran, and rice, making up 75-80% of the diet. Protein sources should be reduced to approximately 18%. Adding 0.5% salt to the feed can stimulate water intake, and some green feed should be included as well. Feed the quails 4-6 times daily, ensuring they have enough food and clean, fresh water available at all times. After 2-3 weeks of proper fattening, the quails should reach a weight of 120-140 grams. You can check by gently fluffing the wing feathers; if the skin appears white or light yellow, it indicates good fat accumulation and readiness for market.
